Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolo’s - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.
What The Critics Say
90/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner
"Here's a fresh, primary expression of Barbera that highlights dark fruit and sweet summer cherry. The Massolino 2019 Barbera d'Alba is all about that fresh and succulent fruit, although, if you spend a little extra time examining the bouquet, you will uncover nicely integrated aromas of forest floor and button mushroom. It ages in cement for six months. This is a cheerful, exuberant and fruit-driven wine that calls out for a plate of fettuccine with porcini. It's not a particularly complex or complicated wine, but it gains points for its easy and proud accessibility. An ample 45,000 bottles were made." Drink 2020 - 2023
93/100 Huon Hooke (2018 vintage)
"Bright, youthful, deep purple colour. Dark cherry, violets and spices to sniff, with a meaty overtone. Blackberry pastilles. Lovely soft tannins and fine, chalky texture. Gorgeous flavours of dark cherries. The acidity is well-balanced, although we're told it's quite high. Love the screwcap. (From 10-45 year-old vines in Serralunga) 10 JUL 2019."
93/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie (2017 vintage)
"Massolino’s barbera is often my go-to from their range despite the range soaring into Barolo crus of note. Here, we find low yields and a well-maintained, single vineyard are also elements at play. It hangs out only in stainless steel and is bottled relatively young. Cherry-laden perfume shows some exotic spice, floral notes, pepper too. Chewy sort of texture with a light juiciness at play, sour cherry spectrum flavours, but in great way, and finishes with a little tug of tannins and bright acidity. Neatly put together wine, feels a little understated in best kind of way. I like the vibe here."
