This is stunning value in baby Barolo, a Nebbiolo from the more general Langhe area made by legends Massolino. Packed with this amazing style's vibrant red fruit, racy acidity and textural grip, the Massolino is a food red with serious presence, power and age-worthiness. We don't have tons of this, and at such a low price this 'Tuesday night Barolo' is one hell of wine -- grab it!

Its Origins

Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolo’s - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Huon Hooke (2017 vintage)

"Medium to full red colour with a purple tinge. The bouquet is very fresh and floral, rose petals and violets. It's dry and savoury on the tongue, very approachable, and the tannins are mild. There is deeply-buried fruit sweetness here. The finish is dry but not too assertive. An outstanding example of the style. (This is essentially a young-vine Barolo. 100% nebbiolo, from vines in Serralunga and a new parcel in Monforte. Spends one year in large casks) 10 JUL 2019." Drink 2019 - 2031

90+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner (2016 vintage)

"The 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo is a clear, direct and immediate wine. It offers those characteristic varietal tones of dried berry fruit, rose hip and licorice with a cheerful and informal approach. This bouquet is mild in terms of intensity, but all the main components are there. There is a very subtle note of sweetness or softness in the mouth that makes this wine a good choice to drink within the next two or three years. With 40,000 bottles made, this wine should be relatively easy to source."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller (2015 vintage)

"Just mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Quite a firm, red-fruit nose and almost a little opulent. Fluid and supple on the palate, while the concentration of this warm year makes itself noticed on the long and very aromatic finish. Firm, serious tannic bite on the finish. Proper Nebbiolo. Bottled two weeks ago after having been in oak for 15 months. Part of the fruit comes from young vines, and a part is declassified Barolo: ‘During the ageing process you see which wines are suited for Barolo and which not. This [wine] helps us to keep the quality of the entry-level Barolo high. (WS).’
