This superb Bannockburn wine is our best discovery from Central Otago. Steve Davies made wine for Carrick and Akarua before developing his own vineyard, which also supplies the iconic Valli Bannockburn Pinot label ($70 bucks a bottle). With a place in the offical NZ Fine Wine List and an average Bob Campbell score of almost 96 points (a category where the average price is $80 a bottle), this wine has quality and pedigree to burn. Subtly powerful and refined in the glass, its darkish fruit is finely packed around a supple core of depth, freshness and mineral layering. A big leap over other Central Pinot at the price, drink this now or cellar it a good while.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

The story of Doctor's Flat Vineyard begins in the late 1980s, in France and California, where Steve Davies first encountered great practitioners of old world winemaking, and the best of new world innovators. By 1999 Steve had settled in Central Otago, making Pinot for Akarua and on the hunt for his own land. He was looking for something in particular—a site that would offer all the conditions he had come to believe were essential for great Pinot. It was a long and thorough search, and in 2002 he found it, an elevated site on deep glacial gravels in Bannockburn. After then making wine for Carrick and supplying grapes to Valli, Steve's Doctor's Flat label is establishing a stellar reputation in New Zealand and overseas for sheer quality and command of both style and terroir.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Ripe, fleshy and quite oaky pinot noir with plum, dark berry, thyme, spice, anise and a hint of roasted chestnut. It has a perfect balance of fruit sweetness and fine, peppery tannins to give a dry and lingering finish. A stylish wine that's accessible but should age well 20 MAR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Distinctive in its ripeness and steely almost haunting bouquet. Aromas of dried raspberry and dark spicy plum, black currant of dark rose, classic Otago wild thyme and rocky mineral layers; complex, youthful and engaging. On the palate - fruity, tense, youthful and dry. Fruit flavours reflect the nose with raspberry and red cherry, some red apple skin then earth, mineral, dried herb and plum. Firm tannins, medium+ acidity and a lengthy persistent finish. A lovely wine still coming together. Will age well from today and through 2022. Best drinking 2021 through 2027."

Air New Zealand Fine Wine List 2019

"Doctors Flat Pinot Noir 2016 was selected as one of just 23 NZ Pinots to make the 2019 list. This pinot shows wonderful purity and class. Black cherries, fresh strawberries, cedar and hints of flint and clove on the nose. Concentrated, yet elegant palate with refined balanced tannins that will support the wines journey in bottle."
