"Following a wine retail background going back to 1966, Paul and Jill Buttery established Gemtree Vineyards in 1980 when they purchased a vineyard on Tatachilla Road in the McLaren Vale. The grew the business releasing their own Gemtree label in 1998. Son Andrew Buttery now heads the company, and his sister Melissa and her husband Mike Brown look after the viticulture and winemaking. The company has made the commitment to sustainability, practising biodynamic farming and achieved Australian Certified Organic certification in 2011. Gemtree owns over 130 ha of vineyards across three main sites and makes a large range of wines over different tiers." Raymond Chan
What The Critics Say
94/100 Halliday's Wine companion (2014 vintage)
"Attacks with flavour and doesn't let up. Inky, blackberried, clovey characters power throughout, tempered only by fruit-drenched tannin, saltbush complexity and meaty/smoky oak. It's almost exactly the wine you?d hope it to be." Drink by 2028
94/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2014 vintage)
"This is joyous McLaren Vale shiraz. Great value, great for winter. A powerhouse of blackberried flavour, slipped thoroughly with smoky oak, with spice, with coffee-cream. Tannin rakes back through the wine, and gorgeously so. Bravo."
95/100 Langtons Auction House (2014 vintage)
"This is a McLaren Vale powerhouse, with great depth to its layers of velvet black fruits, adorned by splashes of dark chocolate, licorice and cedar."
