A voluptuous Chateauneuf that delivers "both power and nuance". This is one of the gems of the Rhone -- a Chateauneuf producer with superb sources and expertise who offers a style thats of full depth and satisfaction without hiking the price. Dark fruited and voluptuous but in no way lacking polish, this Chateauneuf from a great year is drinking well over the money.

Its Origins

Superb buying Chateauneuf at this price. Gerard and Marie-Claude Bonnet founded the estate of La Bastide Saint Dominique in 1976, and it now encompasses 27 hectares of vineyards. The winery and family’s house, which is an old 16th century chapel, is situated in the enclave of Courthezon, walking distance from the town of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Transparency and respect are the ultimate goals of the Bastide St. Dominique wines. They follow the principles of lutte raisonée (sustainable farming ) and intervene as little as possible during the winemaking process. Eric believes the use of traditional farming and winemaking combined with the use of clean, modern equipment best elicit the elegance and minerality of their terroir. The husband and wife team of Eric and Julia are part of a young and exciting group of winemakers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, whose wines are challenging the more famous names of the region in quality.

What The Critics Say

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming

"Tasted blind. Tobacco, chocolate and cooked plum fruit on the nose. Thick, oily, tarry style but there is lovely fruit definition too – blueberry, cranberry, loganberry. Great length with spicy complexity. A great example of Châteauneuf's power without being forced. Shows how the style can have both power and nuance. 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre, 3% Cinsault. Cask sample. (RH)" Drink 2019 - 2033

93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski (2016 vintage)

"As the song says, two out of three ain't bad. The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is an undeniable success, offering subtle garrigue scents and waves of super ripe cherry fruit. Full-bodied and creamy textured, it's lush and velvety yet not overdone, with a lingering finish. I'd opt for drinking it over the next decade."

94/100 Wine Cellar Insider (2016 vintage)

"Lusciously textured, full bodied, polished, sexy and complex, the fruit is ripe, there is density, length, purity and the spicy, supple, black raspberry and plums in the finish rocks! The wine was made by blending 80% Grenache 10% Syrah, 7% Mourvedre and 3% Cinsault."
