Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realise a long held dream to make wine together. Now they make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region.
What The Critics Say
97/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday
"Hand-picked and sorted, open-fermented as whole berries and whole bunches, matured for 14 months in used French puncheons, then a further 14 months in bottle. The wine is still in its infancy, black fruits, spice, pepper and licorice in a Catherine wheel of flavours. It's a special wine that will have a very long life as the tannins are fully tamed. 97/100 The Real Review, Nick Butler
"More dark red than purple in colour. The aromatics are spiced and complex - cured meats, bunch-spice, a Rhône sensibility. Supple and compelling on the palate, plums and cinnamon, even a hint of truffle. This is simply a beautiful wine. Whole-bunch work is measured and adds lovely freshness. It blossoms with time in the glass. Pure class 07 AUG 2019." Drink 2019 - 2031
95/100 James Suckling
"Wow! Attractive plums, hazelnuts, smoked meat and terra cotta. Full body and round, silky tannins. Juicy undertones. Delicious finish. Love the texture and tension to this one. Drink now."
