A great discount on a great value Pinot from Waipara legends, Greystone. The Norwester is a label under which their acclaimed winemaker Dom Maxwell (NZ Winemaker of the Year 2018) achieves at a typical Waipara Pinot for a reasonable price. Flowing with silky fruit, this complex wine also captures those savoury dried herbs and earthy-minerals we hope for from this most promising Pinot region. A serious wine at its original price, this discount is one to jump on!

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

After searching the world for the perfect place to grow cool-climate wines, the Thomas family established the Greystone Vineyard on the slopes of the Teviotdale hills in the Waipara Valley in 2004. We planted 39 hectares of the 153 hectare property of predominantly north-westerly facing land, concentrating on matching blocks with clones and varieties. There were many options with a range of altitudes from 60m to 150m above sea level and soil profiles from light clays through to those rich in limestone content. While Pinot Noir makes up over 60% of the plantings we could see the potential for other varieties in the region and planted blocks of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and even a small block of Syrah.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Fragrant and inviting, the bouquet shows dark berry, thyme, spicy oak and floral aromas, leading to a silky-smooth palate offering bright fruit flavours with savoury nuances. Elegantly structured by fine polished tannins, finishing splendidly long and satisfying. At its best: now to 2028."

4 Stars M.Cooper

"From vineyards 'scattered across the region', the very harmonious 2020 vintage was French oak-matured for nine months. Ruby-hued, it is a fresh, mouthfilling, supple red, with moderately concentrated, ripe cherry and spice flavours, and nutty, savoury notes adding complexity. Still youthful, it should be at its best mid-2024+."

91/100 James Suckling

"Smoky, earthy nose of dried cherries, wet earth, bark, dried leaves, mushrooms and smoked meat. Medium-bodied with tight tannins. Savoury, firm finish."
