Saint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Grapes were originally supplied to local wine companies; however a desire to extend the quality achieved in the vineyard through to the finished wine led to the establishment of Saint Clair Family Estate in 1994. The Saint Clair name originates from the vineyard property, first settled by the Sinclair family. Pioneer James Sinclair built one of the first homes in Blenheim and was closely associated with the early development of the town. Over time the name of the property reverted to the original Saint Clair. Saint Clair has developed six vineyards in different sites in Marlborough, including the Rapaura, Awatere, Waihopai and Omaka Valleys. Only superior fruit from the best locations for each individual variety is selected for the Saint Clair label.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2017 vintage
"Pale straw. Pungent, rich tropical blackcurrant bud and passionfruit aromas combine with notes of green nettle and oyster shell. Generous and intense with concentrated flavours of white peach, passionfruit and fresh grapefruit. A slight herbal edge and salty minerality leads to a long lingering finish."
93/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)
"Moderately concentrated sauvignon blanc, with a flavour profile from the greener end of the spectrum including gooseberry, tomato leaf and green capsicum contrasting with a riper passionfruit influence. A tangy wine with a smooth texture and lingering finish 24/10/2017."
19+/20 Raymond Chan (2017 vintage)
"This has a softly full and deeply concentrated nose with harmoniously melded aromas of passionfruit, fresh herbs, green capsicums and mouthwatering chalky minerals. This has a gentle piquancy along with building richness. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has softly fresh and finely concentrated flavours of passionfruit, blackcurrants, nuances of gooseberries, along with fresh herbs, green capsicums and chalky minerals. The palate is thirst quenching with very fine textures and balanced acid liveliness. The mouthfeel is integrated and beautifully balanced, and smooth flowing, carrying to an elegantly concentrated, sustained finish. Match with shellfish and serve with Pacific Rim fare over the next 2 years. A blend of fruit, 72% from the ‘Blackmore’ and 28% from the ‘Register’ vineyards, both in Dillons Point, cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 12.5% alc. and 5.7 g/L RS. 19.0+/20 Jan 2018 RRP $33.90."
