Its Origins

Quality wines start in the vineyard. It was with that clear vision that Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach moved to the top of the South Island in 1998 and searched for land for almost two years, before purchasing their 20ha block in Tasman on the scenic Coastal Highway. The gentle north-facing slope, the Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate were immediately appealing. In the winter of 2000 they grafted their own vines to plant the first 4ha of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the following winter. Over the years they added Riesling, Gewürztraminer and the Italian red variety Montepulciano into the mix. Born in Switzerland but living in New Zealand since age 9, Daniel began his career as a medical chemist and microbiologist in NZ and the UK, before deciding that winemaking was the path he wanted to go down. He is committed to sustainable/organic winemaking, with very few additions/adjustments made to the wines themselves.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Intense, ripe pinot noir with Black Doris plum, black cherry, liquorice, anise and a hint of wood-smoke supported by a perfect structure of ripe tannins. Delicious now but will cellar well. 4/3/2021." Drink 2021 - 2027

5 Stars Canvas, Yvonne Lorkin

"Clearly 2019 was a year where Tawhirimatea, Maori god of the weather, gave out the good behaviour awards to Blackenbrook's vines. The resulting wine is plucky, plush and showing ripe raspberry, redcurrant, wild strawberry and cherry complexity on the nose and palate. Juicy, refreshingly spicy, bright, vibrant, yet deeply flavourful, it'll absolutely make a good day great, but also soothe any stressy situation."

93/100 Cameron Douglas

"Seductive aromas of brown spics and ripe red berry fruits, some whispers of smoky oak and a fine savoury core with mineral and earth scents adding complexity and intrigue. Delicious on the palate - young and vibrant with a core of fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet, velvet textured tannins, contrasting acid line and persistent varietal flavours with a mineral complexity." Drink 2022 - 2030
