Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere.The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

"Soft and gently voluminous with already complex aromas of ripe, savoury strawberry, cherry and raspberry fruit entwined with red floral, fresh and dried herbs and nuances of spice and undergrowth. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a richly sweet, vibrant core of dark-red cherry and berry fruit along with dark-red florals and subtle notes of fresh and dried herbs, with spice elements. The fruit is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity and the mouthfeel possesses energy and vitality. The fruit is underlined by fine-grained tannin extract, providing a positively driven core and line, leading to a fine-textured, sweet-fruited, lingering finish. This is a deliciously rich, sweet-fruited Pinot Noir with dark red berry fruits and herb complexities on a bright, lively, finely extracted palate. Serve with poultry, pork, lamb and beef dishes over the next 5-6 years. "Mix of clones grown on Moutere clay gravels. Fruit chilled pre fermentation and 100% destemmed. Indigenous yeast and open-topped fermenters, French oak (22% new) and bottled in March 2016.
Healthy mid crimson. Savoury yeast-extract (Marmite) notes on the nose. Vibrant bright fruit and lots of fun. Still quite marked acidity and fine tannins but very promising. Firm spine. Confident, rather dry grip on the palate. But pretty yummy overall, impressively long, and not ridiculously expensive. Not nearly as ambitious as the Moutere Pinot Noir. GV" Drink 2017 - 2022
