2019 Greywacke Marlborough Wild Sauvignon
Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2019 vintage
"Seductive aromas of homemade apricot jam, vanilla cake and candied lemon peel mingle with a tarragon-like herbal quality, scents of dried meadow hay and a whiff of flintiness. Fermented entirely with naturally occurring yeast, this is a ‘wild child’ sauvignon that is both intricate and textural, with a generous, succulent palate that is packed with stonefruit and citrus – a luscious style, yet crisp and dry, with remarkable ageing potential."
97/100 Winerater, Bennet and Hudson (2018 vintage)
"Just wow. Perfumed, bold, expressive and very aromatically complex…Our top scoring Sauvignon after days of tasting for very good reason."
96/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2018 vintage)
"Distinctive texture with a fine lees, brisk acidity and a mineral mouthfeel. Expressive and complex, lengthy and delicious. A fascinating wine!"
