2018 Greywacke Marlborough Wild Sauvignon

93 Points Richard Caro

Surely one of our best NZ Sauvignon Blanc wines. Ex-cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd is a legend of the variety, and here he presents his fully serious expression. From top-stream fruit that is wild fermented in 100% oak, mostly old but with just a spicing of new wood, this wine offers complexity now or the potential to age extremely well. A wilder yet more sophisticated beast than the usual tank-fermented Marlborough Sav, this is a food wine of extreme quality.

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

95/100 The Real Review, Nick Butler (2017 vintage)

"Retaining a healthy pale-yellow lustre. Loads of smoky charm, a measured dose of sulfides, toasty oak and lemon rind. A lovely wine. While concentrated and pure, there's a subtlety to it that takes it to a better place. Terrific winemaking. 19 MAR 2020." Drink 2020 - 2024

93/100 The Real Review, Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)

"Fermented in barrel using indigenous yeasts and transferred out of oak before the following harvest, with a further eight months on lees in tank. The lees, struck flint and subtle oak influence sit nicely alongside bright, herbal-dominant sauvignon blanc characters. 29 FEB 2020." Drink 2019 - 2023

95/100 Huon Hooke (2016 vintage)

"Light, bright yellow colour; the bouquet smoky, barrel-influenced, complex and intriguing. It's restrained, delicate and dry, crisp and balanced with softness and drinkability. The oak is very discreet on the palate. The wine is quite delicate and restrained for a barrel-fermented savvy. It still has a varietal signature. I like its subtlety. A delicious wine."
