Its Origins

Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston, Barossa Valley, seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, and since 1989 the company has been run by Robert and Sam Hill Smith. Yalumba owns over 1000 acres of vineyards, as well as buying in grapes from selected growers, some of whom have been working with Yalumba over 4 generations. The winery is modern and hi-tech and is one of the very few wine companies in the world to have its own cooperage!

What The Critics Say

96/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, Dave Brookes

"Since its first release in 1962, the Yalumba Signature cabernet/shiraz blend has shown a fine pedigree of cellar-worthy wines, and it looks like that bloodline will continue with the 2019 release. Deep, bright crimson in the glass and densely packed with ripe blackberry, black cherry, plum and cassis fruit notes on a bed of fine spice, licorice, cedar, dark chocolate, vanillin oak and light almond blossom tones. There's a wonderful tannin structure here, fine, compact and sandy, lending perfect structure to the pure black fruits. Nothing heavy or overblown, everything in its place, the confluence of fruit/tannin/acidity on song. Pop some in your glass or the cellar. You choose." Drink 2023 - 2038

96/100 Decanter, Tina Gellie

"Tasted in an unlabelled bottle at Yalumba with Hill-Smith Family Estates chief winemaker Louisa Rose and sixth-generation Jessica Hill-Smith who assured me that only proprietor Robert Hill-Smith knew who that year's Signatory was until he made the announcement at the company Christmas party. For this vintage it was two: Yalumba's senior red winemaker Kevin 'KG' Glastonbury and former chief viticulturist Robin Nettelbeck, who retired in 2022 after 45 years with Yalumba. It's the quintessential Aussie red blend, the 52% Barossa Valley Cabernet and the Shiraz from both Barossa and Eden Valleys, from vines 45 to 100 years old, aged 19 months in French and Hungarian barriques and hogsheads, 25% new. The Signature is always a generously fruited, structured wine, but this cooler vintage has imbued it with juicy acidity that really lifts the blackcurrant, mint and violet perfume and adds great freshness and elegance to the concentrated palate. Supple tannins glide over the blackforest-like richness of cherry, chocolate and vanilla through to a long finish. A real stunner and great value for under £40." Drink 2023 - 2037

95/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie

"It’s heady in its perfume, thick scents of ripe raspberry, vanilla coffee, boysenberry and cedar with whiffs of green herb. The palate is impossibly rich and soft, smooth and velvety, voluptuous but with great freshness and a minty lift. Hedonistic style, but the brightness is really appealing, and the wine has veered well away from its past dry, firm, somewhat taxing-in-youth structural styles. A light squeeze of tannin. It’s got Aussie classic written all over it. Delicious drinking for the bolder red lover, or others!" Drink 2023 - 2040
