A seriously deep and rich red of Monastrell (Mourvedre) made by Artadi in a great year. The El Seque wonderfully captures the Mediterranean heat of Valencia's Alicante, in South Eastern Spain. Rich dark fruits and full body bring real satisfaction, while spice and balsamic overtones make it the perfect accompaniment to richer meals, especially grilled meat. To savour or lay down a while, this important Monastrell is something we don't stock often -- delicious!

100% Monastrell (Mourvedre)

Its Origins

The El Seque wines are a joint venture project from Juan Carlos de la Calle from Artadi and Agapito Rico of Carchelo. Motivated by the desire to produce wines with historical content and attracted by the Mediterranean climate, Artadi acquired their 40 hectare property in Alicante ( which is situated in the south-eastern corner of the country ) in 1999. Brown limestone soils, poor in clay and humus - known since the Phoenicians and Romans to be ideal for winegrowing - makes them perfect for producing great wines with tasty Mediterranean character, This vineyard, located at 700 metres, with it’s own resolute and definitive microclimate, really shows off the potential of the Spanish Mourvèdre.

What The Critics Say

93+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez (2013 vintage)

"Produced with Monastrell grapes from old, head-pruned vines, the 2013 El Sequé was bottled in January 2015 just in time for my tasting. The old-vine Monastrell grapes had a long, cool and wet vegetative cycle as the harvest didn't start until early October. The grapes fermented naturally in open vats and the wine matured in 500-liter barrels for one year. This 2013 is still a baby; dark purple with an almost black, opaque core and a nose of damsons, prunes, dark cherries, esparto grass and other Mediterranean herbs. The oak is very well-integrated in what seems like a fruit-driven, concentrated and powerful young red. The palate is full-bodied, built like a tank, but with very good balance, fine tannins and good underlying acidity. This XXL Monastrell gives the impression that it should develop in bottle for many years, turning into an Alicante classic. 30,000 bottles."
