Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albiet sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Rich, weighty, ripe pinot noir with a dense, almost syrupy texture and plum jam, liquorice, Christmas cake flavours. Big and slightly rustic wine with pleasing complexity. It has a suggestion of old vine density with underlying power and a lengthy finish."Drink 2017 - 2023
18.5/20 and 5 Stars Raymond Chan
"Full, even, dark ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The bouquet is full, soft and voluminous with complex aromas of savoury red berry and cherry fruit entwined with dried herbs and undergrowth, a little funky game nuances and whole bunch stalk perfumes, unveiling lifted red florals. Medium-full bodied, the palate has gently concentrated and evenly presented flavours of dark-red cherry and berry fruit harmoniously melded with savoury dark herbs, earthy notes, and subtle whole bunch stalk perfumes, lifted by red floral nuances, The fruit flavours are enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity and supported by moderately extracted, fine-grained, supple tannins. The wine flows smoothly to a dry finish of red fruits and dried herbs. Match with mushroom dishes, casseroles and game meat dishes over the next 5+ years. Multi-clone blend, many of the vines over 30 y.o. and ungrafted, indigenous yeast fermented with 20-25% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 30% new French oak barriques. 18.5/20 Sep 2017 RRP $50.00."
95/100 Decanter (2013 vintage)
"Plump, voluptuous and generous on the nose with mounds of crunchy red fruit. Nicely clean and fresh with an enchanting palate of sumptuous black plums and alluring rich spice."
