Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Serious pinot noir with cassis, dark cherry, anise/spice, plum, dark chocolate, and nutty oak flavours. Although it can be appreciated now this wine is built to last for more than a decade. 25 JAN 2023." Drink 2023 - 2033

95/100 and Outstanding Cameron Douglas MS

"Great colour intensity and brightness leading to a bouquet of complexity, place and time with layers of fresh dark cherry and dried spice, wild red flowers and a stony mineral quality. The oak signature is distinctive with scents of clove and bacon, some five spice and smoke. Overall youthful and new. Dry as the wine touches the palate with youthful squeeze of tannins and acidity, these soon give-way to core fruit flavours that reflect the bouquet then stone, clay and mineral qualities. Tannins are firm, new and ripe, acidity delivers back bone and squeeze and the fruits bring balance and integrity. A wine that must mature in your cellar for at least another 3-5 years before maximum enjoyment can be realised." Drink 2027 - 2037+
