2019 Stanley Estates Reserve Chardonnay
Voted as 'Top Value' from Bob Campbell scoring this a huge 93/100 ( and ranking it 9th out of 34 chardonnays tasted ). The price of other chardonnays ranked with a 93/100 was $35!! A superb buy. Made by Eveline Fraser ( ex Cloudy Bay senior winemaker ). Described as 'Creamy and mouth filling' by Bob Campbell this is a chardonnay drinkers delight. The vineyard is nestled under Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (Maori" "Footprint of the Rainbow"). At the top of the Southern Alps, it strongly influences the climate, with its rain shadow bestowing low rainfall and low humidity upon the Awatere Valley. Along with sunny days and cool nights this creates perfect conditions for slow steady ripening and flavour development. Awatere grapes have a distinctive fruity yet steely and herbaceous flavour quite different to those produced elsewhere in Marlborough.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current vintage
"This wine has a concentrated nose of white peach, citrus fruit and toffee aromas, combined with flint and mineral elements, nuts and a soft, creamy barrel-ferment note. Medium to full bodied wine."
93/100 Bob Campbell (2016 vintage)
"Creamy, mouth-filling chardonnay with white peach, toast, bran biscuit and spicy oak flavours. A nicely layered wine with a pleasing texture and lengthy finish. Offers good value at this price."
18/20 Raymond Chan (2017 vintage)
"Bright straw-yellow colour with lemon-gold hues, lighter on the edge. The nose is fresh and vibrant with aromas of citrus fruits and yellow stonefruits entwined with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak integrated with some lemon-curd MLF. The aromatics are refreshing and steely, and retain a degree of slenderness. Medium-bodied, the palate has an elegant, positive core of citrus and yellow stonefruits along with some creamy oak and nutty lees melded with a little lemon-curd MLF. The fruit has richness and is balanced by crisp, lacy acidity. The wine has good energy, line and tension, and carries to a long and sustained finish. Serve with grilled and roasted seafood, poultry and pork over the next 3-4 years. Fruit from the company’s ‘Little Oasis’ block, vines planted in 2002, fully indigenous yeast barrel-fermented with full solids to 13.4% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 20% new oak, with plenty of batonnage and 100% MLF. 128 cases made. 18.0/20 Jul 2018 RRP $27.99."
