Its Origins
Now one of the premium holdings of the Yalumba group, the Pewsey Vale vineyard (est. 1947) was the very first in the Eden Vale. Still focused entirely on Riesling, and still on its single site, Pewsey Vale sits at 500m above sea level, 250m above the Barossa's hot valley floor. Here, it enjoys the relatively cool temperatures and slow-ripening necessary for a cool-climate grape like Riesling to reach high levels of flavour definition at the locally acceptable balance of alcohol, sugars and acidity. With the vineyard's well adapted old vines and the nearly unlimited resources invested by Yalumba — personified by the loving attention of renowned winemaker and Riesling fan, Louisa Rose — Pewsey Vale's wines and quality-for-value ratio have earned steady barrage of accolades over the years.

"Riesling sourced a single vineyard way up around 490m elevation in Pewsey Vale; made by winemaker Louisa Road. When I was living in the Eden Valley, 10km or so from this vineyard, we used to call Pewsey Vale riesling 'Eden Valley San Pellegrino', such was the gusto with which we consumed it. Nothing's changed. It's classic Eden Valley riesling through and through. Fresh limes, Christmas lily, a sizzling minerally line and thirst slakingly wonderful. "Damn, this is a great Riesling. Year after year it delivers and once again it proves that Riesling is one of the best value wines you will find in Australia. Track this down for a glass of lemony delish. Almost clear in appearance, it's loaded with lemon juice and zest. A minerally drive sits at the core with Jasmine flower aromas heightening the experience. A little fleshy stonefruit makes a fleeting appearance in the mid-palate with green apple bunkering down. Some tension tightens things up with a talc finish to entice you back for more. Rieslings like this scream 'Come at me summer'. It's best you take up the invitation. Drink to five years+"

"This is a good estate riesling. A great go-to. Scents of Rose's Lime, quince, baked apple and tea tree, the acidity sneaking up to impart a gritty finish of talc and vitamin C, detracting. Just a bit shrill. Nevertheless, this will age well for those in pursuit of the Aussie style. Drink or hold."
