2021 Ata Rangi Celebre Red

95 Points Richard Caro
In stock
One of NZ's most consistent red blends, the Celebre from Ata Rangi is serious stuff. It is a Bordeaux blend except that the inclusion of Syrah can sometimes tilt the style in a slightly different direction. Held on its feet by fine savoury tannins, it can benefit from aging but also offer ripe and fully-realised flavours straight off the shelf. Drink now or cellar, this is a sure bet on quality!

Its Origins

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current 2021 vintage

"An intense nose of dark scented aromas of aniseed, black liquorice and cardamom draws you in to a palate peppered with ripe plum and black currant. Densely structured and detailed, 2021 is a riper more profound vintage of Célèbre than the lighter more energetic 2020 . The inclement weather at flowering and late frosts of 2021 resulted in tiny bunches and small, thick-skinned berries packed with flavour and tannin. Thirty-six years on from the first release of Célèbre, this blend continues to go from strength to strength as the vines slowly mature, their roots moving deeper into the gravels of the Martinborough Terrace."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2020 Vintage)

"A blend of merlot, syrah and malbec gives a medley of dark berry, plum, floral and black pepper flavours. A bold, concentrated and youthful wine that is underpinned with ripe, drying tannins. Can be enjoyed now but will reward cellaring. 24 JUN 2022." Drink 2022 - 2040

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2020 Vintage)

"Fabulous bouquet and palate, true to style fo Celebre with aromas and textures, flavours and impact of core red berry fruist, plums and spiced cherry flavours, some tart raspberry and mild peppery blackcurrant flavours. Firm tannins and a back bone of acidity ensure this wines longevity as well laying the foundation for the fruit and wood flavours. A lengthy primary fruited finish with textures of tannins and acidity, minerality and power. Excellent drink from 2025 through 2035+. Decant for service." Drink 2025 - 2035+
