Star-rated by James Halliday, this is a great deal price on a wine that was already serious value. It's packed with Barossa fruit depth and ripeness but is also remarkably nuanced, with spice and savoury characters playing a beautiful role. Well balanced for Kiwi and European as much as Aussie palates, for $20 this is everything to everyone and one hell of a deal!

Its Origins

After managing a B&B in the south of France, Martin and Vivien Rawlinson were inspired to establish St John’s Road in 2001, with a vision to produce full flavoured, yet elegant, wines which reflect the essence of the Barossa. Custodianship of St John’s Road now rests with Phil Lehmann, Jonathon Hesketh, Dale Wyman, Alister Mibus and a variety of Barossa wine growing families. Their aim is to uphold Martin and Vivien’s vision of producing wines that are not only true to the Barossa, but also the sub districts and vineyards they are grown in.

What The Critics Say

90/100 The Wines Front (2016 vintage)

"This fills the mouth with rich, ripe, sweet fruit flavour. It's right on the money. Plum and blackberry with infusions of clove and musk. Fresh, generous, vibrant, fruit-filled; all apply."

18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Very dark, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour, with slight purple hues on the rim. The nose is full with ripe aromas of black plums and berryfruit aromas with notes of liquorice, chocolate, hints of eucalyptus, and spicy, cedary oak, unfolding a hint of toast. This is deep and rounded and well-concentrated. Full-bodied, the palate has deep and concentrated flavours of ripe black plums with liquorice, chocolate, and layers of spice and cedary oak with nuances of eucalypt. The fruit is rich, sweet and harmoniously presented, and supported by fine-grained, supple tannins and integrated acidity. The flavours carry with good drive and energy to a sustained finish. Serve with slow cooked beef and lamb dishes over the next 7-8+ years. Fruit from the ‘Kalleske’ and ‘Schutz’ family vineyards as well as from the estate ‘Hill South Block’ of the ‘Ressurection’ vineyard, Ebenezer, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 10% new 300 L hogsheads. 18.5/20 Jul 2017 RRP $29.99."
