2020 Guigal Cotes du Rhone

90 Points James Suckling
In stock
A nice special on this lush red from true legend of the Rhone. Guigal is the most famous name in the Northern Rhone Valley and this Syrah-led blend is their most widely appreciated style. Ripe Grenache offers bright cherry fruits while a big dollop of juicy Syrah brings delicious depth and spicy structure. This is a favourite of Master of Wine Bob Campbell, who “can never open a bottle of Guigal Côtes du Rhône without being surprised by its extraordinary value and consistency". Effortlessly enjoyable, this is a great red at such a nice discount price!

Its Origins

Guigal is the most famous producer in Côte Rôtie and one of the finest in the Rhône Valley. It was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, following his departure from Vidal-Fleury, where he had worked for just under twenty years. His son, Marcel, joined his father in 1961 and is now the head of the company. Guigal pioneered the notion of single vineyard Côte Rôties and his 3 most famous wines, La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque are amongst the most sought after wines in the world today. Marcel Guigal's attitude to winemaking is typical of the simple genius that one seems to stumble upon when looking at any of the world's greatest winemakers - low yields, organic viticulture and little or no intervention in the cellars - in short, a respect for nature and a passion for the wine itself.

What The Critics Say

90/100 JamesSuckling.com, Stuart Pigott

"An impressive Cotes-du-Rhone with stacks of blackberry and black raspberry fruit wrapped around a core of moderately dry tannins on the bold palate. Long self-confidently dry finish. A cuvee of 50% syrah, 45% grenache and 5% mourvedre. Drink now."

90/100 Decanter

"Modern, lifted and a bit heady, but attractive and evocative. Black cherry inkiness segues into a dense palate where all the fruit is crammed into a structured body with drying tannins. Herbs and stones hemmed in by a firm grip. A good all rounder." Drink 2024 - 2030
