Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Featuring state-of-the art facilities, the winery building was opened in 1978, celebrating with a trial vintage. Leeuwin enjoyed its first commercial vintage in 1979, and was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter Magazine gave its highest recommendation to the 1980 "Art Series" Chardonnay in an international blind tasting.
What The Critics Say
91/100 Huon Hooke
"Very light yellow colour, with a lovely high-toned flowery bouquet. Classic talcum powder riesling florals. The palate is soft and dry, full-ish and intense, with good focus and precision. It's quite tangy and dry and needs food. 18 MAY 2018." Drink 2018 - 2027
90/100 James Halliday
"Pale colour; ripe Meyer lemons are evident on the bouquet with a touch of coriander and straw; the palate is fleshy, generous and forward, and whilst the finish is dry and chalky, will offer its best drinking in its youth."
