A delicious GSM from the new wave Barossa legends, Head Wines. Sourced from relatively old vines, this Grenache-led red blend is a stunning example of the bright and juicy (rather than jammy) "New Barossa" style for which Head are known. With plenty of satisfaction — but and real freshness and flow — the Head Red GSM has been eagerly awated by the staff. Try it before it's gone!

Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro

Its Origins

Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

93/100 The Wine Front,

"A bit of a hot spell during 2019 necessitated upping the amount of Shiraz (30%) and Mataro (20%). Raspberry jubes, pretty, some spice, hazelnut and peanuts. Medium-bodied, fresh, light tannin but enough to shape it, even feel, balance and high drinking appeal, slightly sticky texture on a finish that’s clean and pretty long, a sprinkling of dried herb in the aftertaste. Vibrant, even a little bit ‘minerally’. A bit of a delight, as it were." Drink 2019 - 2025+

89/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke

"Very bright, youthful, deep purple/red hue. The aromas very fresh and primary, cherries and estery yeasty nuances, fresh from the fermenting vat. The wine is medium-bodied and quite firm in its youthfully bold tannins. A most promising youngster with delicious bright, fresh fruit and lots of potential. Fruit drives it: no oak to speak of." Drink 2020 - 2030

93/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2018 vintage)

"40% 76-106yo Barossa Valley grenache, the shiraz and mataro (30% each) from the Eden Valley. Ultra-fresh and vibrant having spent 12 months in used French oak of varying sizes from barrique to demi-muid. You can enjoy it as it is, or give it a few more years in bottle."
