Its Origins

Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday

92/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday (2016 vintage)

"Alex Head's annual 'best value Barossa Valley I can make'. A deeply coloured wine with plenty of savoury tannin backbone, but more than sufficient black fruits to put flesh on the bones, and finishes brightly."

92/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh (2016 vintage)

"Plump, succulent and floral thing, with brown spices, blackberries and assorted stonefruits. Medium to full bodied, a slight meatiness, but pretty much a silky and approachable Barossa Shiraz that slips down pretty nicely."
