Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre) from very old vines
Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday
What The Critics Say
97/100 Halliday's Wine companion, Campbell Mattinson
"159yo vines. 50% grenache, 50% mataro. 10% whole bunches. Immense concentration and yet the flavours are bell clear. This puts the super into premium. It bursts cherries and berries onto the palate and then stamps earth, spices and assorted petals all over. It's dry, serious and joyous at once. There's a whip crack of tannin and rockets of flavour through the finish." Drink by 2040
93+/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh
"A 60/40 blend from the Stonegarden vineyard. 1000 bottles produced. Raspberry, plum, blackberry, spice, spearmint, dried herbs, cut flower stem reduction, honey. Very savoury, very earthy, all dried herb and meat, plenty of grippy tannin, a clear almost mineral water thing happening with the acidity, very long and spicy to close. Curious wine. In evolution, I suspect." Drink 2022 - 2030+
