A lively drop grown in some perfect Sauvignon territory in Nelson. Precise flavours of tree and tropical fruits don't jump out too much but just sit nicely in a subtle, fresh palate. Clean and elegant, this boutique delight happens to be vegan and is equally perfect for the sunny deck and dinner of fish (or Tofu salad, as the case may be).

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Quality wines start in the vineyard. It was with that clear vision that Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach moved to the top of the South Island in 1998 and searched for land for almost two years, before purchasing their 20ha block in Tasman on the scenic Coastal Highway. The gentle north-facing slope, the Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate were immediately appealing. In the winter of 2000 they grafted their own vines to plant the first 4ha of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the following winter. Over the years they added Riesling, Gewürztraminer and the Italian red variety Montepulciano into the mix. Born in Switzerland but living in New Zealand since age 9, Daniel began his career as a medical chemist and microbiologist in NZ and the UK, before deciding that winemaking was the path he wanted to go down. He is committed to sustainable/organic winemaking, with very few additions/adjustments made to the wines themselves.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin

"This wine has some serious pedigree and it’s not only one of Nelson’s finest examples, it’s also one of the greatest $20 sauvignon blancs in the country. I say this because it’s so powerfully aromatic, with lemongrass, lime zest, sweet pea and tropical intensity on the nose and palate. The acid/alcohol/fruit sweetness balance is expertly handled, the textures are generous and juicy and the finish is long and persistent."

4.5 Stars NZ Listener, Michael Cooper

"Highly aromatic, this Nelson Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and punchy, with an array of herbaceous and tropical fruit flavours, a touch of complexity and a crisp, dry, lasting finish."

4.5 Stars Neil Hodgson, Toptastes.co,nz

"Bright and vibrant aromas of ripe gooseberry with background notes of green capsicum simply burst from the glass when you pour it, astounding freshness and vibrancy. This is another beautiful wine from Blackenbrook Vineyard that exhibits the varietal purity we have come to expect from the Schwarzenbach family."
