2017 Voyager MJW Chardonnay
Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.
What The Critics Say
96/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, James Halliday
"Pale straw-green; a most attractive wine from start to finish. The palate opens with a flourish, but does so without bombast. Rock melon, white peach and an echo of grapefruit lay down the path for the long journey ahead." Drink by 2029
95/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson
"Single vineyard, organically farmed. According to the press release: “Natural yeast fermentation over 16 days with 50% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation. Single vineyard, organically farmed." — Margaret River chardonnay almost always delivers good solid flavour and when you combine it with elegance and length, as this wine does, then you’re in pretty special territory. This wine is guaranteed to perform both in the cellar and on the table. White peach, grapefruit, custard apple and spice flavours stretch out into a long, elegant, silken finish. Chalk, lactose, cedarwood and oak-spice all play integrated roles. It’s not ready yet, its best is definitely ahead, but it’s a gorgeous wine, uncoiling slowly." Drink 2022 - 2029+
93+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski
"A best-barrel selection, the 2017 MJW Chardonnay is a mix of Clone 95 and Gingin, about 75–80 cases all together. Cashew notes accent tangerines and white peaches in a medium to full-bodied wine that's plump and round on the palate, then long, focused and a bit saline on the finish. It should drink well for more than a decade." Drink 2019 - 2030
