Cabernet Sauvignon

Its Origins

Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.

What The Critics Say

Winemaker notes on current vintage, Steve James Head of Viticulture and Winemaking

"NOSE: Sweet berries, slightly savoury, rich, complex, structural. PALATE: Sweet berries, slightly savoury, rich, complex, structural. FOOD MATCH: Marbled beef fillet or slow-cooked lamb shanks. CELLAR POTENTIAL: 20 years. WINEMAKING NOTES: “In 1995, North Block was planted with Cabernet and every year it seems to become more expressive. Hand-pruning, selective hand-picking and gentle handling produces a wine that carries all the hallmarks of a classic Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon from our corner of Stevens Valley.”

95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Campbell Mattinson (2015 vintage)

"Ruggedly beautiful. This is brilliant with bold fruit but it's muscular with tannin too; it's like a bodybuilder in sheer lycra. Smooth cassis, silken milk chocolate, a smattering of bay leaves and violets. It has good concentration but it's not a big wine; it doesn't need to be. What it does have is form, presence and persistence."
