Its Origins
Voyager Estate is a premium producer in Margaret River, Western Australia. The late mining magnate Michael Wright pursued several avenues of business and agriculture before setting his sights on owning a vineyard and winery. It was thus an easy decision when he was able to buy what was then called Freycinet Estate from founder and leading viticulturist Peter Gherardi in 1991. Peter had established the vineyard in '78, and it was significantly expanded by Michael over the ensuing years. Apart from the Cape Dutch- style tasting room and vast rose garden, the signpost for the estate is the massive Australian flag pole - after Parliament House in Canberra, the largest flag pole in Australia. Michael's daughter, Alexandra Burt, has been at the helm of Voyager Estate for many years, supported by general manager Chris Furtado and a long-serving and committed staff.
What The Critics Say
Erin Larkin
"I have to say, some vineyards really have a personality to them... And this one was, just, different somehow. The breeze that whipped through it was the essence of coastal and the vines looked... energetic somehow. The wine carried that vineyard feeling into the glass. ”
95/100 Halliday's Wine Companion, Campbell Mattinson (2015 vintage)
"Ruggedly beautiful. This is brilliant with bold fruit but it's muscular with tannin too; it's like a bodybuilder in sheer lycra. Smooth cassis, silken milk chocolate, a smattering of bay leaves and violets. It has good concentration but it's not a big wine; it doesn't need to be. What it does have is form, presence and persistence."
94+/100 The Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson (2013 vintage)
"From a block planted in 1995. It spends 15 months in all-French oak, 50% new. It’s an elegant wine with some grunt. A motor of blackcurrant certainly hums away, gravel and gum leaf characters sparking throughout. The texture is creamy, the oak of the chocolate and woodsmoke kind, the nuances coming from spots of tangerine and raspberry. There light and shade going on here, aided by savoury bay leaf notes. Everything is dotted and crossed here; everything has been arranged just so. It’s hard to imagine it doing anything other than maturing beautifully."
