2017 Cune (Cvne) Imperial Reserva Rioja

95 Points Tim Atkin MW
In stock
Balancing the modern and classical in Rioja red, this special Reserva has had two years in oak and two more in bottle. But bright-fruit remains along with complexity, savouriness, and a tannin/oak structure to age further. Heaps of everything and not too much of anything, this perfection is why the big brother Gran Reserva of this wine was #1 in the world from Wine spectator in 2013.
$49.99 in mixed 6+ or $55.99 per bottle

Usually 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo

Its Origins

The Cune label now occupies the mid-range of the Cvne hierarchy, but the name is based in the family's orginal hometown of Haro, Rioja Alta. It was there that Cvne were established in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo, and over the decades they became and remained one of Rioja's most reliable sources of high quality wine. Soon comprising three bodegas (Asua de Real, Cune and Contino) they maintained the distinctiveness of each, with the Cune label's stylistic integrity built around a balance of old and new style Rioja: clean, juicy fruit with oak influence and ageworthy acid and tannin structure.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Tim Atkin MW

"Not everyone made good wines in 2017, a vintage that threw various curve balls at Rioja, not least the April frost, but Maria Larrea certainly did. This blend of Tempranillo with 15% Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha is youthful vigorous and focused, with fine oak, a green undertone, lots of dark berry fruit and chalky minerality."

93/100 Galloni's Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Saturated garnet. Ripe cherry, red currant and pungent flowers on the expansive nose, along with vanilla and tobacco nuances that build in the glass. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering oak-spiced red and dark berry and fruitcake flavors and a hint of candied flowers. Slowly building tannins frame the clinging finish, which shows excellent clarity and repeating cherry and vanilla notes." Drink 2024 - 2034

93/100 James Suckling

"A firm, tannic red with blackberry and walnut character on both the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a long, flavorful finish. Needs bottle age to soften. Try after 2022."
