A serious Chardonnay by a master of this flinty and complex style. The Soler is a new label by Vidals, where winemaker Hugh Crighton makes some of the most flinty and salty-mineral Chardonnays in the country. With real body and texture balanced by significant complexity, the Soler is an extremely complete wine for this price.

Its Origins

"Vidal Estate has a history stretching back to 1905 when it was established by Anthony Joseph Vidal who emigrated from Spain in 1888 to work for his uncle Joseph Soler, a pioneering winemaker. Under the ownership of the Villa Maria Estates group, Vidal Estate has grown to become its own identity, making distinctive and very high quality wines. With the stewardship of Hugh Crichton, winemaker since 2006, it can be argued that the wines have never been better." Raymond Chan

What The Critics Say

94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Exquisitely styled and seductively elegant, the wine shows white flesh stone fruit, fig, lemon peel and vanilla characters with nuances of cedar and flint. The palate is magnificently weighted and concentrated, exhibiting excellent focus and depth, brilliantly structured by perfectly pitched acidity. Refined and poised for graceful development. $35.00. www.vidal.co.nz. July 2018." Drink 2019 - 2024

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Flavoursome, textural wine with salty, struck flint, peach, savoury, hazelnut and nutty oak flavours. Quite a rich, complex and gutsy wine, with a backbone of fresh acidity and slightly peppery tannins. 16/7/2018" Drink 2018 - 2022

5 Stars and 19.5-/20 Raymond Chan

"The nose is full and voluminous with good depth of softly-packed complex aromas of white stonefruits harmoniously layered with an amalgam of citrus fruits, nuances of gunflint and minerals, and a little nutty oak. There is a deep core to the aromatics. Medium-bodied, the palate has a rounded and well-concentrated heart of white stonefruits interwoven with nutty and mealy notes, and some flinty, minerally reduction adding to the complexity. The flavours gently open to fill the palate, and flow along a light-textured line with soft, lacy acidity lending energy. This has good drive and some underlying power, and the wine carries to a long, sustained finish of stonefruits, nuts and flint. Match with poultry, pork and veal over the next 4 years. Fruit from the ‘Kokako’ vineyard, Ohiti Valley, vines planted in 2008, fully barrel-fermented, partially by indigenous yeasts to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 40% new oak with batonnage, and approx. 15-20% undergoing MLF. 400 dozen made. 18.5/20 Jul 2018 RRP $35.99" Drink 2018 - 2022
