A powerful Barbaresco from one of the region's most famous vineyards. This new import from the renowned Cigliuti family was grown in their trademark Serraboella vineyard. Located in the hills above Nieve, and this site traditionally produces reds that are comparable in quality, density and depth to the very most renowned Crus in Barbaresco town itself (like the famously Barolo-like wines of Montestefano). Needing a little time but able to improve for decades, the legendary Cigliuti Serraboella is one of the new and true gems of our Piedmont range. Collect!

Its Origins

The Cigliuti family have been in the business for four generations, though it was not until 1964 that Renato, the present winemaker, began bottling the wine to sell. Of their 8 hectares, 6 are used for vines and 2 for their continuing hazelnut business. He is now helped in the cellar by his daughters, Claudia and Silvia. The Cigliutis practise "lutte raisonee", using only copper sulphate in the vineyards. Fermentation is done in stainless steel at controlled temperatures and maturation takes place in Slovenian and French large barrels and barriques. The Dolcetto is aged in big oak barrels for 2-3 months, an immensely attractive red fruited wine, spicy, with bright acidity and for early drinking. The Barbera is a particularly beautiful wine, one of the best modern style examples of this grape you can find. The Briccoserra has traditionally been a blend of Nebbiolo and barbera but now includes 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 15 months in new barriques, but with such complexity of flavour that you would hardly know. The Barbaresco is aged in both large old oak barrels (60%) and new barriques (40%).

What The Critics Say

96/100 Jeb Dunnuck

"The 2017 Barbaresco Serraboella has lovely floral aromatics of pure ripe cherry, anise, cedar, and white pepper. Savory with game and iron-rich earth, the palate remains medium-bodied, with generous raspberry fruit, refreshing orange zest, crushed roses, and dusty earth. Drink 2021-2042."

94/100 Wine Spectator

"Claudia and Silvia Cigliuti run this Neive estate, founded by their father Renato in 1964. They age this Barbaresco in large casks and used barriques, Complex aromas and flavors of macerated cherry, raspberry, plum, earth and underbrush are backed by a dense structure of lively acidity and dusty tannins. The ripe fruit at the core plays out on the lingering finish."

93+/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Barbaresco Serraboella captures all the best the vintage has to offer. Floral and lifted, the 2017 is a bit more red-fruited and lighter in body than most vintages, but it has plenty of depth as well. A more gracious, finessed side of this Neive cru emerges over time. The 2017 is a sensual, arrestingly beautiful Barbaresco from Cigliuti, although it has plenty of tannic grip. In 2017, the Serraboella doesn’t have the heft and darkness of most years, but at the same time, it reveals a different facet of this site, which is quite intriguing. Sadly, yields are down 80%. The Serraboella is typically done in a combination of cask and smaller barrels, but yields were tiny, only enough to fill a single cask. My impression is that the Serraboella could turn out to be one of the hidden gems of 2017." Drink 2023 - 2037
