A beautiful Barolo in an elegant but textural style. This Massolino is powerful with beautiful depth, a fine structure and real finesse. Delivering harmony with charisma in the relatively masculine style of this area, Massolino commands and transports the palate. Will age well, but its balance and generosity will makes it decantable now with some rich red meat. Supreme value!

Its Origins

Massolino are among the foremost Barolo producers, with deep history in Serralunga d'Alba. Giovanni Massolino founded the estate in 1896 and was also the first to bring electricity to his village. Son Guiseppe and daughter Angela were likewise ahead of their time, in 1934 extending holdings in what are now regarded as some of Barolo's best crus - Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Whilst channelling their tradition, Massolino also utilise the heavier clay soils of Serralunga to bring a satisfying breadth, density and structure to their Barolo’s - which, balanced against their extreme refinement and expressive clarity - make them almost incomparable for the price.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Huon Hooke

"Medium to full brick-red colour, showing some development. Ironstone, rocky, earthy mineral aromas, the palate is very dry, quite firm and dense. Full-bodied, with power and length. A definite step up from the Langhe Nebbiolo in complexity and depth. Very long and drying, with great sapidity. (The fruit is all from 10-55 year-old vines in Serralunga. Spent 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 4, 000-10, 000 litres) 10 JUL 2019." Drink 2019 - 2037

91/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Barolo is bright and beautifully focused, with lovely red berry, orange peel and floral character. Medium in body, translucent and gracious, Massolino's straight Barolo is fabulous in 2015. This is a very pretty, classy wine that readers will be able to enjoy with minimal cellaring. Even so, the straight Barolo has a track record of aging gracefully. Vineyard sites are Briccolina, Collareto, Broglio, Le Turne, all in Serralunga, plus a bit of fruit from Parussi, which is in Castiglione Falletto."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller (2014 vintage)

"Just mid ruby, lustrous, with the beginning of orange tinges. Savoury nose at first with a peppery edge and hint of liquorice with ripe fruit lurking underneath. Minerally and with a touch of oak. Super-fresh, elegant and with tannic bite on a racy fruit finish. Really appetising. Lithe! Serralunga d’Alba. Total skin contact of 14 days and aged for two years in large 40- to100-hl oak casks. 5.8 g/l acidity. (WS)" Drink 2018 - 2026
