2016 Pagliarese Chianti Classico Riserva

93 Points James Suckling
In stock
A serious Riserva from a traditional estate in Chianti Classico. This is an old-school blend of finely structured Tuscan Sangiovese deepened by the darker-fruited inflections of its ancient vineyard companions, Canaiolo and Mammolo. This once-famous Pagliarese label has been revived by Felsina, who depart from their modern and single-varietal principles to capture this traditional blended style. At about the cost of a good Classico, this Riserva has pedigree written all over it and can only rise in price and regard. Get in at the ground floor on this!

90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Mammolo.

Its Origins

Pagliarese is a historic Chianti Classico estate located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, nestled between Fèlsina and Castell’in Villa. In the 1960’s and 70’s, Pagliarese was, in fact, one of the most highly regarded estates in Chianti Classico. However, by the 1980’s, the property was in need of some investment, particularly in the vineyards. In 1995, the Poggiali family, owners of Fèlsina, bought the estate and set out to replant 28 of the 32 hectares using a massale selection from the oldest vines at the property. Starting with the 2015 vintage, the Poggialis decided to make their inaugural release from the estate. The range includes a Chianti Classico to be followed by a Riserva and a Vin Santo. Whereas Fèlsina is known for their 100% Sangiovese bottling, Giovanni Poggiali describes the hallmark at Pagliarese as being a “modernization of the old style.” While the wines at Paglierese are, of course, Sangiovese-based, they are also blended with small amounts of Canaiolo and Mammolo - two indigenous grapes to Tuscany that are perfect partners to blend with Sangiovese. Canaiolo can soften Sangiovese a bit and Mammolo adds floral and spicy notes when blended but neither dominates Sangiovese as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot often can.

What The Critics Say

93/100 James Suckling

"A rich and structured red with black-cherry and plum aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Chewy and polished tannins, Long and flavorful finish. Needs two or three years to soften.”

92+/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is another terrific wine from Pagliarese. Juicy dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and sage give the Riserva lovely darkness and flavor intensity. The tannins need a bit of bottle age to soften, but there is plenty to like and look forward to here, most notably the wine's real sense of vibrancy. Dollops of Canaiolo add character to this decidedly powerful, old-school Riserva from Pagliarese, a Fèlsina sister estate." Drink 2026 - 2046

92/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"Pagliarese is a sub-brand made by the same folks that give us the gorgeous wines of Fèlsina in Castelnuovo Berardenga. The Pagliarese 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is bright, tight, firm and teeming with wild berry flavors. Fine mineral etchings also appear. The wine's acidity is on point and is well-measured to the mid-weight style that this wine wears so confidently. I'd serve it with sliced grilled steak over a bed of radicchio and arugula, with drizzles of extra virgin olive oil plus some course salt." Drink 2019 - 2027
