Felsina's premium Fontalloro is 100% Tuscan Sangiovese. But is labelled a 'Super Tuscan' simply because some of the old vines are outside the Classico zone (Fontalloro or Poggio al Sole are within it, but Casalino and Arcidossino are in Chianti Colli Senesi). A deliciously elegant yet plush expression, the sheer care and quality here are palpable. Sangiovese puts forwards darker fruit than usual, but retains the grape's native poise and medium body, with huge satisfaction in the aromatic brightness and layering. Loaded with both the indescribable complexity and effusive charm that Felsina are so famous for. Decant soon or cellar.

Its Origins

The estate vineyards straddle the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi region, and are quite close to the town of Siena. There are 61 hectares of vines in all, but the property is much bigger, totalling 475 hectares, and including olive trees, wheat fields and forests. The name Felsina dates back to the Etruscan people, and back to 2000 BC. Many words in Italy beginning with ‘Fel’ or ‘Bol’ have Etruscan roots. The modern era of Fèlsina began in 1966 when current owner Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s father-in-law acquired the property. They began with 9 hectares of vines, but grew this by massale selection to its current size, and acquired a second property: Castello di Farnetella, in the Colli Senesi.

What The Critics Say

98+/100 Parker's Wine

"The 2016 Fontalloro is the best vintage of this landmark wine that I have tasted thus far. This is a very elegant vintage, with more volume in the mouth and precise notes of tar, licorice, camphor ash, resin and Indian spice. In a race between the highly competitive 2015 and 2016 vintages, I give a slight advantage to this wine. The warmer 2015 vintage shows more richness and exuberant fruit. However, this wine from 2016 offers a more focused and chiseled delivery. I am hopeful that this wine will continue to evolve and sharpen as it ages in the bottle. This is a beautiful wine to put aside in your cellar for ten years or more."

93-96/100 Vinous, Antonio Gallon

"The 2016 Fontalloro is marked by vertical lift and a level of sheer structural intensity that is rare for this usually more sensual wine. Powerful, deep and also quite reticent, the 2016 is going to need a number of years before it starts drinking well. Even so, that it is a very special wine in the making is abundantly evident." Drink 2024 - 2046

93/100 Wine Enthusiast

"Aromas of dark-skinned fruit, exotic spice, blue flower and menthol shape the nose. It's linear, focused and ethereally elegant, offering succulent Morello cherry, raspberry compote and star anise alongside fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity lends balance." Drink 2020 - 2028
