Nautilus Methode Traditionelle
70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay
Nautilus are a family-owned winery and member of the Family of Twelve; Twelve prestigious family-owned wineries around New Zealand. Grapes are selected to harness the different sub-regional flavours of Marlborough’s terroirs. State-of-the-art facilities combine with traditional winemaking techniques: In 2000 they opened the first dedicated Pinot Noir winery in the Southern Hemisphere and in 2006, completed a separate energy-efficient white winemaking facility. Whilst Nautilus wines can be enjoyed on their own, belief in the marriage of fine wine with food is a driving force for winemaker Clive Jones (winemaker since 1998) as he crafts each into a sophisticated and elegant wine. The winery was established in 1985 by the Hill Smith family, proprietors of Australia’s oldest family owned winery, Yalumba.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Bob Campbell
"Elegant, powerful sparkling wine showing the effect of three years "en tirage" with plenty of aromatic yeast autolysis character. Silken-textured wine with lovely bready, chocolate flavours. Quite champagne-like. Between 5% and 15% of the blend comprises reserve wines from previous vintages that have been aged in old oak barriques for extra complexity and character. The quality of this non-vintage wine has steadily increased in recent years. It is now one of the country's very best sparkling wines."
19/20 Raymond Chan
"Approx. two-thirds Pinot Noir. Bright straw-yellow colour with fine bead and good effervescence, The bouquet is softly full and well-integrated and harmonious, quite complete with fine stonefruit and hints of citrus, seamlessly melded with bready autolysis. Dry, tight and finely-textured with creamy, smooth flow, the detailing of stonefruits and yeastiness is subtle, and beautifully proportion, leading effortlessly to a lovely piquant and dry, refreshing, mouthwatering finish. Sheer class in bubbles, Nautilus is becoming more refined with each release."
