A single-site Shiraz from an increasingly regarded and small-volume Barossa house. The Brunette is sourced from old vines on deep red clay soils in the Barossa sub-zone of Moppa, where some of the highest elevations in western Barossa allow a lower degree of alcohol and even a level of minerality in the resulting wine. With immense depth but also elegance and freshness, the Brunette is a worthy comparison to the Cote Rotie to which it is a homage. Quantities are very low, so collect now!

Its Origins

Head Wines is the venture of Alex Head, who came into the wine industry in 1997 with a degree in biochemistry from Sydney University. Experience in fine wine stores, importers and an auction house was followed by vintage work at wineries he admired: Tyrrell’s,Torbreck, Laughing Jack and Cirillo Estate. The naming of the wines reflects his fascination with Côte-Rôtie in the Northern Rhône Valley. The two facing slopes in Côte-Rôtie are known as Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. Head’s Blonde comes from an east-facing slope in the Stone Well area, while The Brunette comes from a very low-yielding vineyard in the Moppa area. In each case, open fermentation (with whole bunches) and basket pressing precedes maturation in French oak. -- James Halliday

What The Critics Say

95/100 Huon Hooke

"Deep red/purple colour, with a smoky, slightly cooked fruit aromas - without loss of vitality - the palate rich and deep, ample-bodied, rounded and harmonious. The wine is beautifully rounded and has terrific line. It lingers on and on. Soft tannins and black fruits. A totally satisfying glass of full-bodied shiraz. (From the Moppa hills. 20% whole-bunch; 30% new oak. Barrique aged) 24 APR 2019." Drink 2019 - 2034

92/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh

"20% whole bunch. Moppa the sub-region.Chocolate, rosemary, wet earth, pepper, blue and black fruit. Medium bodied, tannin is pretty grippy and gritty, and dry, blue fruits and chocolate, mocha and earth, dry and spicy to close. A little sausage too. Cool vintage showing in a wine with a furrowed brow."Drink 2020 - 2027+

97/100 Halliday's Australian Wine Companion, Jane Faulkner (2016 vintage)

"From Moppa Hill, on the highest part of the Western Ridge of the Barossa, with an easterly aspect so it only captures morning sun. Rich and deep, with an abundance of flavours, yet never dipping into overripe territory. Perfect balance in every respect, the vortex of fruit, spice and integrated oak leading onto the full-bodied palate, greeted by velvety tannins and an overwhelming desire for another glass."
