A wonderful Pinot Noir from a top Victorian producer. This increasingly regarded Pinot is superbly elegant, offering a whole spectrum of expressive red to dark fruits embedded in a complex floral and savoury array. Pure quality and textural refinement, the Giaconda is an outsanding Burgundy-style red for a relatively modest price. Stocks are very low!

Its Origins

Giaconda vineyard was established by Rick Kinzbrunner, a mechanical engineer who became interested in wine in the early 1970's. Rick then spent the next ten years working in the industry, travelling and following his passion for wine. After a brief stint in New Zealand, he studied at Davis University in California and worked at some of the most respected wineries in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys (namely Stag's Leap, Simi and Matanzas Creek). In Europe he worked for the Moueix group in Bordeaux, co-owner of the fabled Chateau Petrus. After returning to Australia in 1980 to take up a position as assistant winemaker at Brown Brothers in Milawa, Rick purchased land in the nearby Beechworth wine region - at the foothills of the beautiful North-East Victorian Alps. Planting commenced in 1982 and the property is now devoted solely to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. A separate planting of Nebbiolo has also been established close to the Beechworth township at Red Hill. Total area under vines at the Giaconda Estate Vineyard is now 4 hectares. Annual wine production is approximately 2,500 dozen bottles. Rick’s son Nathan Kinzbrunner also works full time at Giaconda and has done so since the 2007 vintage. Since 2018 we are now fully certified organic by the Bio Dynamic Research Institute (BDRI).

What The Critics Say

98/100 Andrew Caillard MW

"Fresh wild strawberry, raspberry pastille, aromas with a hint marzipan/ roasted almond notes. Beautifully balanced Pinot Noir with strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, hint chinotto fruits, fine chalky/ al dente textures. Superb mid palate viscosity and underlying vanilla marzipan oak notes. Finishes slinky and long. Wonderful voluminous Pinot Noir with superb concentration and mineral torque. One of the finest of the 2021 Australian vintage."

96/100 RobertParker.com, Erin Larkin

"The 2021 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir is a journey; at this early stage, it's a wine of several parts. First, it is aromatically sweet and creamy, with hints of strawberry, red cherry, cherry blossom and milk chocolate. In the mouth, the wine is savory, structural and silky. While the red fruit dominates, this is clearly a wine of complexity and svelte power—it is long and extended in the mouth, with sinewy tannins that hold the fruit, the acidity and the fine texture together as one. This is a very good Pinot Noir—seriously layered, fine, spicy. 13.8% alcohol. "Grown in gravel clay soil, in the foothills of the Victorian Alps." The drinking window may be conservative here. It fermented in concrete vats, before being basket pressed to French oak for up to two years of aging in the subterranean, gravity-flow cellar onsite in Beechworth, Victoria." Drink 2023 - 2043

95/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke

"Medium-full ruby with a tint of purple and a pronounced vegetal bouquet suggesting whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is full and strongly constituted, with abundant tannins and serious pinot structure, the finish lingering long. There's a sappiness to the aftertaste, showing considerable extract, and a savouriness that is emphatically more in the serious red-wine realm than 'pretty' varietal pinot. Drying tannins cleanse the finish. 13 DEC 2022." Drink 2024 - 2034
