2016 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco Ovello
The ex-director of Alba’s Royal Enological School Domizio Cavazza purchased this property in 1894, confounding locals by deciding against investing in the famous Barolo area. He had correctly identified the potential of the Nebbiolo grape here, on hills above an obscure village called Barbaresco, and it was on this property that he produced the very first wines under the now-famous Barbaresco appellation. Some years later it was purchased by the Vacca family, Renato Vacca being the current proprietor. With approximately equal range (40-70 years) in both the age of the vines and of that of the family workforce of aunts and uncles that look after them, the production of Cantina del Pino is the perfect balance of clean and polished, temperature-controlled modern winemaking with an authentic edge and local flavour. Antonio Galloni: “Humble, down-to-earth, yet intensely driven, Renato Vacca is making some of the most exciting wines in the region. Vacca’s holdings are concentrated in and around the Ovello vineyard, a site long noted for its combination of cooler microclimate and poor soils, which give structured, age-worthy Barbarescos. Not only were the wines from Cantina del Pino among the standouts of my tastings, they also happen to be among the best values in Barbaresco. In short, I can’t say enough good things about the wines of Renato Vacca. Readers owe it to themselves to check out this up-and-coming producer.”
What The Critics Say
98/100 Wine Enthusiast, Kerin O'Keefe
"Rose, iris, woodland berry and crushed mint aromas shape the irresistible nose on this radiant, classy red. Showing a remarkable combination of structure, elegance and pedigree, the delicious, focused palate delivers juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, star anise and an almost salty minerality while firm but ultrarefined tannins provide seamless support. Bright acidity bestows impeccable balance and youthful tension." Drink 2024 - 2036
94/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Monica Larner
"The estate's benchmark wine, the 2016 Barbaresco Ovello reveals a pretty, open-knit personality with beautifully concentrated fruit. Dark cherry, blackberry and plum is framed by tar, campfire ash and powdered licorice. The Ovello cru opens onto a large panorama of vines and a sudden drop down to the Tanaro River. These vines at Cantina del Pino enjoy wide open spaces and slightly milder temperatures as a result. These conditions give the wine an open and generous approach. A mere 6,000 bottles were made." 94+/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2016 Barbaresco Ovello is fabulous. Bright, punchy and tightly wound, as young Ovello Barbarescos are, the 2016 packs a ton of punch. Crushed rocks, mint, white pepper, sweet red berry fruit and anise reveal themselves with a bit of aeration. The purity of the fruit, searing tannins and translucent energy are what young Ovello is all about. This taut, nervous Barbaresco is classic Ovello and classic Cantina del Pino." Drink 2024 - 2041
