2016 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco Gallina

Grape
Nebbiolo
Its Origins
The ex-director of Alba’s Royal Enological School, Domizio Cavazza, purchased this property in 1894, confounding locals by deciding against investing in the famous Barolo area. He had correctly identified the potential of the Nebbiolo grape here, on hills above an obscure village called Barbaresco, and it was on this property that he produced the very first wines under the now-famous Barbaresco appellation. Some years later it was purchased by the Vacca family, Renato Vacca being the current proprietor. With approximately equal range (40-70 years) in both the age of the vines and of that of the family workforce of aunts and uncles that look after them, the production of Cantina del Pino is the perfect balance of temperature-controlled modern winemaking with an authentic edge and local flavour. Antonio Galloni: “Humble, down-to-earth, yet intensely driven, Renato Vacca is making some of the most exciting wines in the region. Vacca’s holdings are concentrated in and around the Ovello vineyard, a site long noted for its combination of cooler microclimate and poor soils, which give structured, age-worthy Barbarescos. Not only were the wines from Cantina del Pino among the standouts of my tastings, they also happen to be among the best values in Barbaresco. In short, I can’t say enough good things about the wines of Renato Vacca. Readers owe it to themselves to check out this up-and-coming producer.”
What The Critics Say
96/100 Wine Enthusiast, Kerin O'Keefe
"Another gorgeous showing from this hard-working estate, this opens with heady aromas of camphor, woodland berry and violet along with a whiff of exotic spice. Elegantly structured and radiant, the precise palate features succulent red cherry, cranberry and licorice alongside the barest hint of espresso. Firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity provide balance and an ageworthy structure. It's still youthfully austere and will benefit with more cellaring." Drink 2024 - 2041
94+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner
"The Cantina del Pino 2016 Barbaresco Gallina opens to soft and pliant red fruit that wraps smoothly over the palate. This wine shows an immediate and accessible character that makes it a pleasure to drink straight out of the gate. Dark fruit tones segue to spice, spent embers and tangy medicinal herb. To the palate, this wine offers good volume and a medium-rich, fleshed out approach. A plate of traditional agnolotti del plin stuffed with minced meat would make a perfect match. Production is small with just 1,800 bottles produced." Drink 2022 - 2040
93/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"The 2016 Barbaresco Gallina is a very pretty, approachable wine. Sweet red berry fruit, flowers, mint and pine all flesh out as this supple, mid-weight Barbaresco opens in the glass. Best of all, the 2016 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. The Gallina is the most accessible of the 2016s at this stage." Drink 2023 - 2036
