2021 Bouchard Meursault 1er Cru Genevrieres

94 Points Jasper Morris MW
In stock
A truly great Chardonnay from Meursault's lauded 'Genevrieres' vineyard. As Meursault has no Grand Crus, Premier Cru wines like this are the ultimate and definitive expression of the famous style. The soil here is lime and clayish gravel with some iron, allowing a beautiful balance of stony drainage and water holding for fruit lushness. While it is relatively warm and ripe, such austere soils produce high fruit quality with depth and mineral complexity. A rounded and complete expression of great Chardonnay terroir – and very good value for the price.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Inside Burgundy, Jasper Morris MW

"Pale lemon colour. This is discreet at first on the nose, but classic Genevrières delicacy and intricacy develops on the palate, all lightly washed in a citrus juice. The oak speaks a little but is well integrated. Not a massive wine but all nicely in place. Tasted: November 2022." Drink 2026 - 2032

93/100 Decanter, Charles Curtis MW

"There are lovely grapefruit aromas here with accents of chamomile, butter, and spice. The texture is fresh and very fine, enlivened by a delightful, lightly bitter note that gives it depth and substance. The grapes from the domaine-owned vines in both the upper and the lower parts of the vineyard bring complexity, and the use of no more than 20% new casks for ageing helps safeguard the purity of the fruit. This wine should open in a few years and will doubtless drink well for another twenty." Drink 2023 - 2035
