Winemaker Simon Waghorn has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label. This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
What The Critics Say
90/100 Bob Campbell MW (2017 vintage)
“Fresh and appealing sauvignon blanc with ripe apple, gooseberry, guava, lime and grapefruit flavours. Tangy wine with a contrasting suggestion of juicy sweetness, although it finishes dry. Attractive wine offering excellent value at this price.” Drink 2017 - 2020
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2017 vintage)
“Bargain-priced, the 2017 vintage (4*) was grown in the Awatere Valley (46 per cent), Wairau Valley (41 per cent), and further south, on the Kekerengu Coast (13 per cent). Freshly aromatic, it is mouthfilling and dry (2.3 grams/litre of residual sugar), with ripely herbaceous flavours, showing a touch of complexity, slightly salty and minerally notes, and a long finish.”
