2019 Neudorf Tiritiri Sauvignon Blanc

A super-elegant Sauvignon from Nelson legends. Tiritiri is the new name and labelling of their standard Sauvignon Blanc offering, which is a quiet achiever in the range and is sometimes overshadowed unfairly by their stellar reputation in other flagship varieties. The acidity and herbal nuance here is gorgeously delicate, as is the texture, which allows all kinds of subtle fruit and mineral elements to come through. A 'grown-up' Sav for aperitif or seafood.

Its Origins

Nelson is the sunniest viticultural region in New Zealand. Relatively isolated, it has never developed into large scale production but several wineries have established an excellent reputation for quality. Prime amongst these is Neudorf, created by pioneers Tim & Judy Finn back in the late 1970s. The winery buildings have developed steadily since 1980, and so has the reputation of this excellent producer specialising predominantly in chardonnay and pinot noir. Their flagship wines are designated by the subregion of Moutere. The Neudorf estate, lying on a mix of glacial outwash clay, now represents 12ha, though buys in fruit from a further 30ha (of managed vineyards). The viticulture is sustainable "lutte raisonnée" with organic practices being introduced since 2008. The wines are all made with minimal intervention; hand harvesting, wild yeast, low S02 and soft, supporting oak.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Tiritiri is a new brand for Neudorf. Tiritiri is Te Reo meaning to cultivate or grow. Tirtiri sits under the Estate label, is made from grower grapes and is not necessarily made from organic grapes or grapes grown on the Waimea Plains. It's worth noting that the previous vintage of this wine was grown on the Waimea Plains and had the same recommended retail price. Nonetheless, the revised branding does draw a rather clearer line in the sand. A serious rather than showy sauvignon (always looking for alliteration opportunities) with concentrated melon, apple and citrus flavours that dominate an array of more subtle notes (try ginger and roasted nut). A good food wine. 17 JAN 2020." Drink 2020 - 2023

Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier

"Fragrant, spicy, herbaceous and fruity with aromas and flavours of gooseberry, fresh herbs, pineapple, golden kiwi, grapefruit and apple. Youthful, fresh and vibrant textures with salivating acidity, a fine lees autolysis, a whisper of ginger and tropical fruit flowers. Fruit and herb flavours return. Nice light weight and length."
