2019 Elephant Hill Sea Viognier

95 Points Bob Campbell MW

One of the best in the country, this estate Viognier (now labelled "Sea") is consistently superb. We don't know how they do it – but it works. Elegantly bright and floral/mineral on the nose, gentle stone fruit leads you through a fresh but oily palate of subtle power, texture, length and nuance. This is a must for any lover of elegant but generous, aromatic whites. Volumes are small so jump on this!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"It might be the power of suggestion, but I swear that I can smell the briny scent of the sea in every glass. From a coastal vineyard at Te Awanga. It's 60% barrel fermented and left on the lees for seven months. This is a delicious viognier with ripe pear, apricot and honeysuckle flavours. 28 JUN 2020." Drink 2019 - 2025

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"A stunning expression of the variety; the complex and engaging bouquet shows ripe apricot, honeydew melon, fig and rich floral aromas. It’s equally impressive on the palate, delivering excellent concentration and expansive mouthfeel wonderfully enhanced by plush texture and beautifully pitched acidity, leading to an opulent, sumptuous finish. $34.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. July 2020." Drink 2020 - 2025

5 Stars The Wine Writer

"Beautifully refreshing and striking aromas of stone fruit, juicy tangerine, and white blossoms. A soft, rounded palate weight with a slight oily texture. Flavours of peach, nectarine, and lemon pith with a splash of acidity and an incredibly complex and spicy finish"
