2018 Craggy Range Gimblett Gravels Merlot
Craggy Range began with the desire to create a legacy. When Terry Peabody visited New Zealand in 1997 he was introduced to Steve Smith, MW. Terry sensed an exciting possibility in New Zealand; the exceptional climate and spirit of the people aligned with his own philosophy and desire to cut a new path. He wanted to create wines that would become internationally regarded as New World classics. The two men made an important decision from the beginning - to select and source the best land in the country, and to plant the vines perfectly suited to that soil and climate. The winery - one of the most technically advanced ever built in New Zealand - is known for uncompromising standards and meticulous craftsmanship.
What The Critics Say
Winemaker notes on current 2018 vintage
"Deepest crimson red. Lifted violets and blue fruit with subtle biscuity oak notes. Velvet like tannin structure that carries a long pallet of poached plum and freshly picked blueberries. Food Match: Braised lamb. Recommended Cellaring:1 to 15 years." from vintage
94/100 Sam Kim (2014 vintage)
"Beautifully styled, superbly ripe and elegantly poised, this is a gorgeous rendition of the variety showing dark plum, violet, spice and cedar characters with subtle game complexity. The palate is concentrated and silky, and offers loads of appealing flavours, framed by fine, chalky tannins. Already a charmer, but promises to develop magnificently. At its best: 2017 to 2024. $32.00. www.craggyrange.com. March 2016."
