2017 Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir

96 Points Bob Campbell MW

A complex top Pinot Noir from Waipara's old hands. These sun-facing terraces have been a 30 year home for Pegasus' older vines, some on original rootstocks (very rare in New Zealand). They only make this wine in the best years and do this in a Burgundy-style, hand-harvesting in stages to capture a variety of red and black fruit flavours, along with some whole bunches in the natural ferment. The result is mouthfilling yet restrained, with a superb display of bright and nuanced fruit, wild herb and mineral characters. Outstanding and legendary.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A selection of the best barrels from exceptional vintages and mostly from the oldest, ungrafted vines. Intense, elegant pinot noir with plum, dark cherry, floral, spice and anise flavours. Showing the benefit of a little bottle age but with potential to develop further. A very classy wine 28 OCT 2021." Drink 2021 - 2030

94/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW

"This is a fragrant and characterful barrel selection from some of the oldest, ungrafted plants in Pegasus Bay's Pinot Noir vineyards. While it is silken and suave on the palate, the finish is much firmer. Around one-third of the fruit underwent whole-bunch fermentation, which has not only helped with its sense of sappy direction but provided the herbal aromatic lift. It's an elegant, medium-bodied expression that retains a sense of its cool climate in its dynamic personality. Expect a lick of vanilla oak (45% new barrels) but that's well integrated by the fruit density. The lengthy finish is scented yet brooding, reminiscent of thyme, pine, smoked meats and, of course, fruit - think damsons and red cherries. While this structured example could be approached now with a hunk of protein, you'd be perfectly within your rights to put it in your cellar to evolve during the 2020s." Drink 2021 - 2030

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Joe Czerwinski

"The 2017 Prima Donna Pinot Noir epitomizes what this bottling is all about: finesse, silkiness and harmony. Scents of cola, spice, black cherries and earth come together seamlessly on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is smooth and supple yet lively, bright and invigorating, with a long, mouthwatering finish."
