2016 Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir

96 Points James Suckling

A complex top Pinot Noir from Waipara's old hands. These sun-facing terraces have been a 30 year home for Pegasus' older vines, some on original rootstocks (very rare in New Zealand). They only make this wine in the best years and do this in a Burgundy-style, hand-harvesting in stages to capture a variety of red and black fruit flavours, along with some whole bunches in the natural ferment. The result is mouthfilling yet restrained, with a superb display of bright and nuanced fruit, wild herb and mineral characters. Outstanding and legendary.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Located in arguably New Zealand's most exciting wine region of North Canterbury (more specifically, Waipara), albeit sparsely scattered with wine estates it is at the forefront of interesting and unique wines in NZ. This is due in part to a fabulous free-draining, well protected terroir. Pegasus Bay is run by the Donaldson family who were pioneers in the region and have been involved with local grape growing and winemaking since the 1970's. The whole family are involved in the process from grape to bottle, and a deep respect for the land, with a long term view towards vine and soil health typifies the Donaldson Family's approach to grape growing. Pegasus Bay is an accredited member of the NZWG sustainable viticulture program and are firm believers of using natural methods to combat pests and diseases rather than the application of unnecessary pesticides and herbicides.

What The Critics Say

96/100 JamesSuckling.com, Nick Stock

"A very impressive pinot for the complexity and richness it offers … a very intense and plush feel with plenty of dark cherries and plums, wrapped in smooth and polished tannin."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Flagship pinot noir in a typically rich and generous style made using 30% whole-bunches during fermentation. Dense, silken-textured wine, with a mellow savouriness and flavours suggesting ripe plum, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, spice and anise. A complex and appealing red. 13 APR 2020." Drink 2018 - 2025

95/100 Cameron Douglas Master Sommelier

"Immediately varietal with plenty of primary red fruit aromas, medium to dark spices of toasty French barrel, brown spices and a sandy, chalky soil impression. Youthful, complex, layered. On the palate - dry, savoury, fruity and complex. Flavours of toasty wood and dark berries, dried herb and dark spices, earthy, complex and long Still primary, still developing complexities and harmony strings. A wine that’s still good to keep in the cellar. Decant for service or keep till early 2021 and taste again. In other words - this is a keeper - no rush."
