2016 Elephant Hill Hawkes Bay Merlot Cab Malbec

5 Stars Raymond Chan

A gorgeously plush and stylish red from a great vintage in Hawkes Bay. It is led by bright-fruited Merlot, in which the ripeness of a hot year is enlivened by real freshness and structure for a typically perfect, modern Bordeaux style. Depth and satisfaction with lush fruit and fine, toasty oak -- another winner from Elephant Hill.

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Wonderfully fruited and inviting, showing blackberry, plum, toasted almond, floral and cigar characters, leading to a beautifully weighted palate that is plump and fleshy. The wine offers youthful fruit purity and delightful intensity, backed by fine chalky tannins, finishing impressively long and attractive. At its best: now to 2023." Drink 2018 - 2023

18.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Elegantly presented with finely concentrated and packed aromas of ripe dark-red and black plums and berry fruit, along with subtle notes of blackcurrants and herbs, with spiced blackberries and iron-earth elements emerging in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a rich and well-packed heart with deep and dense flavours of ripe, savoury dark-red and black plum fruit, entwined with some blackcurrants, spiced plum, liquorice and earthy interest. The fruit sweetness is balanced by fine, grainy tannin structure lending grip and texture. The wine carries to a long finish of plums and liquorice with some alcoholic power. Match with roasted lamb, beef and venison, and semi-hard cheeses over the next 6+ years. A blend of 67% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec and 5% Cabernet Franc, 55% from the Gimblett Gravels and 45% from the Triangle vineyards, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 22 months in 30% new French oak barriques. 18.5/20 Oct 2018 RRP $36.00" Drink 2018 - 2024
