A stylish and balanced Viognier from the oldest vines in the country. Unctuous texture and peachy florals occupy this seamless, elegant and yet satisfying wine. From old vines, this is one of the wines to beat in $30 Kiwi Viognier. Try it with a fancy dinner of rabbit, or a South East Asian takeout.

Its Origins

Hawke’s Bay is a very special place for making wine. Its range of slopes, plains and climatic differences, coupled with low humidity and ample ultra-violet light, give winemakers a comprehensive toolkit to showcase their skills. Soils are young and derived from the gravels, silt and sands left behind as the three main rivers of Hawke’s Bay changed course over thousands of years. Te Mata Estate was established here in 1896 specialising in high-quality wines of classical style. The estate was purchased by the Buck and Morris families in the mid 70's, who were influenced by the great wines of France, with Peter Cowley coming on as winemaker in 1984. Peter and viticulturist Larry Morgan have moved the estate into high-quality, self-reflective, low yield winemaking with a focus on sustainable farming. Although Te Mata are mainly known now for the Coleraine, the Bullnose Syrah was called the New World's best red by Steven Spurrier.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Gorgeously fruited and fragrant, the wine shows ripe apricot, rockmelon, thyme and floral characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is wonderfully weighted and expansive. Elegantly opulent and varietally expressive with rich texture and bright acidity, leading to a lingering delicious finish. This is outstanding."

95/100 Bob Campbell MW (2016 vintage)

"Rich and quite oaky viognier, with attractive apricot, subtle honeysuckle and roasted nut flavours. 100% barrel-fermented with 10% new oak and a full malolactic fermentation. An impressive wine with fully ripe flavours (seldom achieved in this country) and freshness from tangy acidity 14 NOV 2017."

5 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)

"This estate-grown wine is from Woodthorpe Terraces, on the south side of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke's Bay. Hand-picked, it is partly fermented and lees-aged in seasoned French oak barrels. Delicious young, the 2016 vintage (5*) is a sturdy, fleshy dry wine, with deep, well-ripened stone-fruit flavours, barrel-ferment complexity, gentle acidity and a seductively soft finish. It's ready to roll."
