Quality wines start in the vineyard. It was with that clear vision that Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach moved to the top of the South Island in 1998 and searched for land for almost two years, before purchasing their 20ha block in Tasman on the scenic Coastal Highway. The gentle north-facing slope, the Moutere clay soils and the mild maritime climate were immediately appealing. In the winter of 2000 they grafted their own vines to plant the first 4ha of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the following winter. Over the years they added Riesling, Gewürztraminer and the Italian red variety Montepulciano into the mix. Born in Switzerland but living in New Zealand since age 9, Daniel began his career as a medical chemist and microbiologist in NZ and the UK, before deciding that winemaking was the path he wanted to go down. He is committed to sustainable/organic winemaking, with very few additions/adjustments made to the wines themselves.
What The Critics Say
4 Stars Michael Cooper (2016 vintage)
"Estate-grown at Tasman, hand-harvested and lees-aged in tanks (mostly) and old oak barrels (4 per cent), the 2016 vintage (4*) is dryish (5 grams/litre of residual sugar), with a freshly aromatic, intensely varietal bouquet. Showing good vigour and intensity, it is tangy, with tropical-fruit and green-capsicum flavours, fresh and tangy."
Neil Hodgson, The Nelson Mail (2016 vintage)
"This Sauvignon Blanc has a range of flavours and textures that are immediately enticing, with a rounded palate weight and bursting with green capsicum flavours wrapped around flinty acidity - it is a delicious wine!"
Bob Campbell MW
"Blackenbrook is small ( 4 hectares ) and new ( first wine from 2004 ), so its hardly surprising it's little known outside Nelson. Swiss owners Daniel and Ursula Schwarzenbach have the meticulous approach to winemaking for which their countrymen are famous, while Daniel has some serious winemaking experience under his belt. He has worked for top producers in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and France, and has judged wine at competitions in Switzerland, France, Germany and China. Its greatest strengths are pinot gris, gewurztraminer, riesling, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. Quality has crept up in recent years and if it continues, Blackenbrook has a very bright future."
