2018 Greywacke Marlborough Riesling

95 Points Cameron Douglas MS
In stock
A deliciously succulent and rich Riesling from experts in classic Marlborough varietals. Grown organically near the mouth of Brancott Valley, this vibrant and not strictly dry Riesling was grown on the kind of gravel and clay soils that are usually associated with Marlborough's high-end Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A wine of serious enjoyment and potential, the Greywacke Riesling is delicious.

Its Origins

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1993 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own. This quality focused winemaking venture sources fruit from mature vineyards within the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys. The wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Complex, pure, fruity, varietal and real. A Riesling with familiar aromas of wild flavours of white rose, Meyer lemon, red apple and honeysuckle, apricot stone and lime-flower. Just a little sweetness on the palate with an immediate flourish of flavours from citrus to flowers, stony soils to fruit spice, an abundance of citrus to apple. Long detailed finish, a lovely wine. Cellar or drink - best from today and through 2026+." Drink 2019 -2026+

94/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Delicately luscious riesling in a medium-dry style with lime, white flowers and ripe apple flavours, plus a suggestion of saline or oyster-shell character. The wine has an appealing roundness and richness, with a silken texture and good sweet-and-sour tension 29 FEB 2020." Drink 2019 - 2025

92/100 Huon Hooke

"Bright, light-yellow colour, with a lightly toasty, lemony bouquet, plus a hint of peach nectar. The sweetness confirms this as a more fruity style, promised by the nose. Juicy, off-dry flavour backed up by very firm, drying acidity that leaves a note of austerity on the aftertaste. It's enhanced by a little phenolic grip. A fuller-flavoured riesling that will taste better with fish and seafood. 29 FEB 2020." Drink 2020 - 2027
